William Scharf - Abstract Expressionism

William Scharf is a painter whose subject is color. Scharf, a late-generation Abstract Expressionist and who apprenticed in the studio of Mark Rothko, applies paint in translucent layers to achieve depth and luminosity. He creates groups of paintings around the theme of a single color, working in a variety of scales and using shapes both geometric and biomorphic.Scharf's work has been exhibited in a number of galleries, including the Anita Shapolsky Gallery, Meredith Ward Fine Art, and Hollis Taggart Galleries in New York City.

James Timothy Gleeson - The Master of Surrealism

“James Gleeson ( 1915 — 2008 ) is Australia’s foremost surrealist artist. He is also a poet, critic, writer and curator. He has played a significant role in the Australian art scene, including serving on the board of the National Gallery of Australia.… Since the 1970s Gleeson has generally made large scale paintings in keeping with the surrealist Inscape genre. The works outwardly resemble rocky seascapes, although in detail the coastline’s geological features are found to be made of giant molluscs and threatening crustacae. In keeping with the Freudian principles of surrealism these grotesque, nightmarish compositions symbolise the inner workings of the human mind. Called ‘Psychoscapes’ by the artist, they show liquid, solid and air coming together and directly allude to the interface between the conscious, subconscious and unconscious mind.Gleeson’s later works incorporate the human form less and less in it’s entirety. The human form was then represented in his landscapes by suggestions, an arm, a hand or merely an eye.“

John Levee - Abstract Expressionism Art Works

“John Levee (1924 — 2017) was an American abstract expressionist painter who had worked in Paris since 1949. His early painting was inspired by the New York School of Abstract Expressionism, which included Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Willem de Kooning and Philip Guston, among others. After a period of hard-edge painting based on geometric abstraction in the 1960s, Levee returned to his more spontaneous Abstract Expressionism style, often using collage elements with loose brush work typical of lyrical abstraction “

Roland Brener - Contemporary Art

Brener's early practice grew from the formalist innovations of his contemporaries at Saint Martin's. During the 1980s his work developed a more playful individuality as he began to incorporate consumer items, most often toys, and experiment with kinetic sculpture driven by electronic motors or computers. In his later work he began to use the computer as a design tool to produce fantastical distortions of everyday images and objects which were then fabricated in wood or synthetic materials.

Luc Leestemaker - Painting of Space - Abstract Landscape

«Luc Leestemaker was a painter of space – increasingly, of pure space. Leestemaker anchors us on earth by composing each landscape painting around a horizon line; but for that, we could be adrift in the cosmos. Around that horizon he confabulates an atmosphere of rich, tempered pigment, of nuanced color, of light captured and diffused, of what can finally only be described as breathable paint. These are the least specific landscapes (or, if you would, seascapes) possible, and yet, or perhaps as a result, we recognize in them so many places we know, or at least remember – recognize them almost, but not quite, to the point of naming them. These could be depictions of foggy days, afternoons at the shore, views from heights shrouded in clouds; but more accurately, they are recollections of such scenes and moments, impressions of impressions, themselves robbed of detail by the vagaries of memory. Leestemaker’s landscape paintings challenge us not only to identify where we are, but ask us to think about where we’ve been. And then, with the palpability of that rich paint, they draw us forward, further amplifying the question: Where are we going?»

William Ronald - Canadian Abstract Painting

William Ronald ( 1926 – 1998) was an important Canadian painter, best known as the founder of the influential Canadian abstract art group Painters Eleven in 1954. William Ronald was a graduate of the Ontario College of Art who quickly found that abstract painters could not get their work exhibited in Toronto galleries. Working for the Robert Simpson Co. department store, he persuaded management to pair abstract paintings with furniture displays, thereby discovering a way to get the public to accept non-representational art.
