Abstract painting Marian Bogusz

«Independent artist and painter. Born 1920 in Pleszew, died 1980 in Warsaw.
Marian Bogusz spent part of World War II as a prisoner of the concentration camp at Mauthausen. This experience did not, however, directly influence his later life. Perhaps this enabled him after 1945 to become one of the most important figures in the Polish arts, both as an independent artist and as someone who spawned many important community and national projects which, although varied, were primarily avant-garde in nature. Bogusz received his training as a painter between 1946 and 1948 at Warsaw's Academy of Fine Arts where he studied under Jan Cybis and Jan Sokołowski among others. In 1947 he began to work actively with the Warsaw-based Young Artists and Scientists Club, which was an unusually lively source of intellectual and artistic initiatives whose impact was felt throughout the country. During the Socialist Realist period he withdrew into the background, as did many artists, limiting himself to designing scenery and exhibitions....»

Contemporary art Mikołaj Smoczyńsk

«Mikołaj Smoczyński was a painter, photographer, draughtsman, performance artist, and author of objects and installations. He was born on 22nd March, 1955, in Łódź, and died in Lublin on 2nd January, 2009.
He graduated from the State Higher School of Plastic Arts in Łódź (1974-75) and the Institute of Art Education at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin (1975-79, diploma from Jan Popek's workshop). In 1984-85, he worked as a fellow at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in Ryszard Winiarski's workshop. In 1979, he started teaching at the Institute of Art Education of his alma mater. Mikołaj Smoczyński was known for creating site-specific installations and black and white photographs resembling abstract paintings. In his works, he focused on the specifics of the material he was applying as well as on matters relating to place and space. The essence of his art lay in capturing an individual's experience in reference to reality in flux.
Smoczyński's early painting works were inspired by American abstractionists, predominantly Franz Kline. He also felt a strong affinity with such styles as minimalism and Arte Povera.
He only painted for a short period of time, after graduating from university. In the early 1980s, Smoczyński began producing objects that went past the definition of painting, but could not yet be described as installations. Installation art appeared later on in his practice, as an offshoot of his painting style, which had been elaborated into three-dimensional forms.
The artist decided to start documenting these altered states of space, considering photography to be the most appropriate medium for doing so. For a period of time, Smoczyński created installations in his studio, solely for the purpose of photographing them, such as in the series The Secret Performance. He carried out these kinds of actions during Martial Law. Being able to concentrate on a personal, internal experience allowed him to cut himself off from the unacceptable reality outside of his working space...»(culture.pl )

Avant-garde art Max Walter Svanberg

«Max is early in his life inspired by the female body, already as a 10 year old he makes sculptures in wood of women torsos.
Starts to work on technical school in the decoration department in 1929. Starts on Art School in 1931.
Exhibits his first pieces of art in 1935, some flower stilleben, but with a little touch of sureallism. In 1942 he starts the group Minotaur together with a.o. Hulten and Osterlin. In 1945 Jorn visits Malmoe, as he after the war is eager to seek for artists and inspiration after 5 years in the occupied Denmark, he meets Minotaur, and the artists in these circles.
In 1946 Svanberg creates the expression 'Imaginism' and most of the group Minotaur follows this direction.
In 1949 Jorn talks to Imaginisterne about Cobra, and they find that there are a lot of common interests, so Imaginisterne becomes the Swedish branch of Cobra, as Host was the Danish craddle for Cobra.
Svanberg participates in a few exhibitions, but gets after Cobra more and more inspired by the surrealism, which this lithograph shows, he makes a litograph for Cobra nr. 5. shown below.
During the 50's and 60's his pictures get more surrealistic, and very erotic, illustrated among others in the exhibition in Malmoe Kunsthal in the summer of 1979, the catalog is very fine documentation on Svanberg. „

Nine years later he moved to Ganslberg, a farming community outside Landshut where he lived and worked on a horse farm. Abstract Art Karen Lillards

«Karen Lillards journey as a painter can be enclosed within the category of Survivor Art, Intuitive, abstract, abstract expressionism, and message art. Her inspiration is derived from color primarily combined with her own internal intuitive mechanism, and self analysis. Karen is an individual who seeks depth and intensity in all things. Her works are abstract, expressive and meaningful. Her favorite materials are oil and ink. The surfaces she uses include glass, canvas and walls. She started painting five years ago; after a lifelong career outside of art. Karen has had no formal training and has developed her style strictly by doing. Her pieces almost always are created entirely with palette knife. She chooses her palette and then begins to move the paint There is no plan, no drawing, simply whatever is inside revealing itself. Karens message art creations incorporate quotes into her paintings that have significant meaning and are provocative and/or inspirational. Her work is quite simply an intimate look into the soul.....her soul. „
