Reuben Nakian - Masterpieces of Sculpture

Reuben Nakian ( 1897–  1986) was an American sculptor and teacher of Armenian extraction. His recurring themes are from Greek and Roman mythology. …” Nakian is unrepressed, un-neurotic, unabashed in his approach to sensuality, however tortuous his esthetic commitment, and whether his subject be death, bestiality, or Arcadian dalliance. This explicitness gives the “Nymph and Satyr” plaques a marvelous joy and ease, the “Europa” terra-cottas a voluptous dignity, and the “Leda and the Swan” drawings an almost comic abandon. Unlike most sexually oriented images in modern art, from Auguste Rodin to Andy Warhol, one finds no guilt or masochism in a Nakian .”

Philip Pavia - black-and-white sculptures

Philip Pavia (1911-2005), the pioneering first-generation son of an Italian stone carver, «turned rocks into art.» The Times of London called Pavia «arguably more of an original than some of his better-known contemporaries.» He was rare among his peers for sculpting abstract and figurative art, and he took full advantage of a lengthy 74-year career to develop his reach. Although he started his career as a draftsman and watercolorist, Pavia ultimately made his mark with a body of work that spanned all-abstract bronzes, black-and-white abstractions in Carrara marble.

Thornton Dial - Assamblage & Sculpture

Thornton Dial, a self-taught artist whose paintings and assemblages fashioned from scavenged materials told the story of black struggle in the South and found their way to the permanent collections of major museums.
Thornton Dial was a pioneering African-American artist best known for his large-scale assemblage paintings. He melded complex themes like Civil Rights history, archaeology, and construction, through the use of materials like cow skeletons, American flags, and rebar. Often referred to as an “outsider artist,” Dial’s work is highly biographical. Born on September 10, 1928 in Emelle, AL, Dial's youth was filled with hardship, born into poverty on a sharecropping farm. Though he never received any formal art training, he made sculptures from found objects from a young age. Dial spent much of his life working construction for the Pullman Company, around Birmingham, AL. In 1981, he retired from welding and construction and devoted himself to his art.

Jacques Lipchitz - Crystal Cubism

«Jacques Lipchitz’s work has been commented upon internationally by leading art scholars and the most eminent museum directors. It is present in practically every museum in the world, from the Metropolitan Museum in New York to the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, to the Tate Gallery in London to the Museum of Rotterdam. His public work is in cities such as Philadelphia, Rome, Paris, London, Los Angeles, etc..
This great artist who had to emigrate in 1909 from Lithuania to France and then in 1941 from there to the United States, always took his ideas and talent with him. His work not only speaks of exiles but also of the misfortunes of man (in the mid 1950’s his New York studio burned down) and above all of man’s recoveries, with references both to Greek mythology and to the Old Testament. In his personal cocktail shaker of forms, Lipchitz returns to the images of different religious traditions to create a poem, visual in his case, like lyrical mysticism that transcends the usual meaning of words in search of the ineffable, of a transcendental sculptural experience.»

Zao Wou-Ki

«Working at the intersection of several different worlds, Zao left China for Paris in 1948, just as the domain of „living art“ was beginning to be divided between France and the United States. His oeuvre traverses the aesthetic debates that accompanied the development of modern art, and while part of a rewarding Paris scene, he was very quick to spot the vitality of American painting; in addition he was gradually returning to certain aspects of Chinese painting that he had previously severed contact with.No lover of the term „landscape“, Zao preferred to speak of „nature“.

Alexander Liberman - Sculpture

«Alexander Liberman, Russian-born artist and editor (born Sept. 4, 1912, Kiev, Ukraine Russian Empire—died Nov. 19, 1999, Miami Beach, Fla.), was the legendary editorial director (1962–94) of Condé Nast publications and credited with inventing the look of the modern fashion magazine. The son of a wealthy timber merchant, Liberman attended boarding school in London and studied painting and architecture in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts. He took his first job as art director at Vu in 1931, becoming managing editor before departing in 1936. After a failed brief first marriage, Liberman moved to New York in 1941 with Tatiana du Plessix, another Russian émigré, whom he married a year later. On the strength of a magazine-design prize he won at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1937, Liberman was hired at Condé Nast in the art department of Vogue. Elevated to art director of all Condé Nast publications in 1960 and editorial director in 1962, Liberman established himself as the magazine world’s supreme arbiter of taste and style.

Norman Bluhm - American Abstract Expressionism - Action Painting

«Norman Bluhm has created four distinct bodies of work over the nearly fifty years of his career. His purpose has been consistent throughout his career, namely to create paintings that express his spiritual vision in the most profoundly human way possible, that is, truthfully, with style and high drama. His paintings demonstrate the intimate connection between the erotic and the spiritual by virtue of their orgiastic intensity, that is, the passion and skill invested in their execution, and the extraordinary quality of light that emanates from the finished work of art. Each body of work represents a new stage in his spiritual growth, beginning in his search for himself and his own style and ending in a profoundly personal realization of unity of all things in his mature paintings.»(James Harithas, Director,  The Station Museum, Houston, Texas)

Roberto Crippa - European Abstract Art

“The painter-sculptor Roberto Crippa was born in Milan in 1921. He studied at the Brera Art Academy in Milan where he was the fellow student of Aldo Carpi, d’Achille Funi and Carlo Carra. At the beginning of his career, like lots of young painters of his generation, Roberto Crippa was influenced by neo-cubism and was thus generalized. His first solo exhibition was at the Bergamini Gallery in Milan in 1947.
The artists was one of the first in Italy, to practice gestural painting, which he produced between 1948-1952 his sharply-colored spiral webs. In 1948, Crippa becomes one of the founding members of the Spacialist group, a group founded around Lucio Fontana, whose objective was to search for a new spatial representation, by technical means that was resolutely modern. From 1948 he participated regularly in group exhibitions and notably the Biennale of Venice. ..”
