Manolo Millares - Tachisme - European Abstract Art

Manolo Millares (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, 17 January 1926 – Madrid, 14 August 1972) was a Spanish painter. Self-taught as an artist, Millares was introduced to Surrealism in 1948. In 1953, he moved to Madrid and became an abstract painter. In 1957, Millares along with Antonio Saura and Pablo Serrano founded the avant-garde group El Paso (The Step) in Madrid. After showing his work in San Pablo in 1957, Millares' work was introduced to the United States in 1958. He attained an international reputation by the early 1960s, and had a solo show at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York in 1961.In Madrid, Millares was associated with ‘The Informalists’, a group of artists including Antoni Tàpies, Enrique Tábara, Antonio Saura, Laurent Jiménez-Balaguer and Aníbal Villacís among many others who insisted that art should be removed from theory and concept. To these artists, the gesture used to make a painting was all-important. In the 1950s, Millares began to make dramatic collages from found materials..

Judith Scott - American fiber sculptor

Judith Scott (May 1, 1943 – March 15, 2005) was an internationally renowned American fiber sculptor.udith was born into a middle-class family in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1943 along with her fraternal twin sister Joyce. Unlike Joyce, Judith was born with Down Syndrome. During her infancy, Judith suffered from Scarlet Fever, which caused her to lose her hearing, a fact that remained unknown until much later on in her life…..Her creative gifts and absolute focus were quickly recognized, and she was given complete freedom to choose her own materials. Taking whatever objects she found, regardless of ownership, she would wrap them in carefully selected colored yarns to create diverse sculptures of many different shapes. Some resemble cocoons or body parts, while others are elongated totemic poles. Many of her works also feature pairs, reflecting Scott’s experience as a twin. Judith worked on her art five days a week for eighteen years, producing over 200 pieces in total

Hawkins Bolden - Outsider art

«Hawkins Bolden (1914-2005) was from Memphis, Tennessee.  We met him in the mid-1990's.  We had seen his jaw-dropping piece in the  Passionate Vision's art show at New Orleans Museum of Art and knew we had to meet the maker.  The exhibit was a beautiful well represented exhibition of Self-Taught Artwork, most of whom we recognized and in the middle was a pair of stuffed pants sitting in a chair with bucket with holes in it as a head of sorts.
We went to meet Hawkins to talk to him about his piece that moved us and ended up becoming friends with he and his amazing story-telling sassy sister, Elizabeth.  Hawkins was in his 80's when we met him and he had been blind since the age of 7.  They were both so sweet and welcoming to us.
Hawkins primarily used buckets, hubcaps, tin cans, and assorted metal to make figures.  He called them scarecrows with his only purpose of „scaring off the birds.“  He started with smoothing the metal with glass, then drilling into the metal he created holes which would be manipulated and opened with various tools he made and railroad ties.  The holes represented eyes. Then he added tongues made from rubber hose, shoes, carpet or such to create a figure.»

Stani Nitkowski

«Stani Nitkowski was born on May 29, 1949. Born to a miner father, of Polish origin, who came to Anjou to work in the slate quarries, and of a Piraean mother, Stani Nitkowski found himself, at 23, in a wheelchair because of myopathy. He quickly abandons abstraction, and begins to draw with ink. His meeting with Robert Tatin, a painter in Cossé-le-Vivien, will encourage and influence him. His first exhibition was in Angers in 1974. On the advice of Jean Dubuffet and Robert Tatin, he meets Cérès Franco who welcomes him in his gallery L'Œil de Bœuf several times. At the same time, Roland Vanuxem becomes his merchant. His work as an artist is deeply marked by his illness. His work is strong, black, tortured in the image of his life. Upset by the death of his son in February 2001, Nitkowski chose to disappear in April, at age 52. „

Kikuo Saito - Lyrical Abstraction - Color Field

Kikuo Saito (1939 – 2016) was a Japanese-born American abstract painter with ties to the Color Field movement and Lyrical abstraction. A former assistant to Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, and Larry Poons, Saito's work infuses richly saturated colorscapes with delicately drawn lines. Saito was the creator of sui generis theatre and dance events, collaborating with innovative directors and choreographers Robert Wilson, Peter Brook, Jerome Robbins, and dancer and choreographer Eva Maier, to whom he was married for several decades. His productions combined wordless drama in the poetic frameworks of light, costumes, music, and dance, most of which he devised and directed himself.
